15NBS Chambers is delighted to welcome Barra McGrory KC as a member of Chambers. Barra has a wealth of knowledge and experience having been a solicitor advocate from 2000, he was the first and still the only solicitor to be awarded the rank of silk in Northern Ireland in 2007, as a result Barra transferred to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 2009. Barra is also a Senior Counsel in the Republic of Ireland and an active member of the Irish Bar. Barra was then called to the Bar of England and Wales 2016.
Barra has engaged in two landmark cases against the UK Government in the European Court of Human Rights, In Mc Cann, Savage and Farrell v UK (1995 ECHR 18984/91) and Shannon v UK (2005 ECHR 6563/03). Barra represented eleven individuals, including the late Martin McGuinness MP and former Deputy First Minister in the Bloody Sunday Inquiry. Barra has completed extensive Inquiry work such as The Robert Hamill Inquiry and the Rosemary Nelson Inquiry. Barra also served as the DPP for Northern Ireland from 2011 to 2017.
Barra has appeared for the defence in a major SOCPA trial in Northeast England involving a shooting incident between rival drugs gangs in Sunderland, a murder in Newcastle Upon Tyne and in Bristol Crown Court, where he defended the co-founder of the neo-Nazi terrorist group, National Action. Barra has appeared in the High Court, Commercial Division for the Royal Bank of Scotland Shareholders Action Group in litigation arising from the successful claim taken by shareholders against the bank in 2017.
